What we check, and what we cannot promise.
You are deciding whether to let someone into your home and leave your children with her. The only useful thing this page can do is tell you precisely what Mitlea has done and precisely what it has not, so that the judgement you make is your own and is based on something real.
In an emergency, call 911.
Mitlea is not an emergency service and cannot dispatch help. If a child is hurt or in danger, call 911 first, then tell us what happened so we can act on it.
Verification
How verification actually works
There is no automated screening service behind these badges and no algorithm deciding who is safe. A person looks at evidence and records that they looked.
- 01
She shows us the document
On a video call or in person, a caregiver holds up the actual document — her driver's licence, her CPR card, her background-check report — and a person at Mitlea looks at it.
- 02
A named person records what they saw
That person writes down which document it was, the date it was issued and the date it expires, and the record carries their name. A badge exists because a specific human being at Mitlea said they saw the evidence.
- 03
We do not keep the document
Mitlea does not store identity documents or background-check reports. There is no archive of licences and no library of criminal records, because a database of other people's identity papers is a liability to everyone in it.
- 04
The badge lapses when the evidence does
A certification with an expiry date stops showing the moment it passes. It is not downgraded to a weaker claim — a lapsed certificate is no claim at all, and the badge simply disappears until she shows us a current one.
An unbadged profile has not failed anything
What each badge is allowed to say
These are the exact claims. No page on Mitlea may state a badge more strongly than the sentence written here, and none of them means Mitlea is vouching for how a person will behave in your home.
- Identity verified
“Mitlea has checked a government photo ID against this person.”
Evidence: your driver's licence or passport, shown on a video call. Checked once; it does not expire.
- Background check
“Mitlea has reviewed a criminal background check for this person, dated within the last 12 months.”
Evidence: your background check report, shown to us directly. Re-checked when it expires.
- CPR certified
“Mitlea has seen a current CPR certification for this person.”
Evidence: your cpr certification card, with its expiry date. Re-checked when it expires.
- First aid certified
“Mitlea has seen a current first aid certification for this person.”
Evidence: your first aid certification card, with its expiry date. Re-checked when it expires.
- References checked
“Mitlea has spoken to two families this person has cared for.”
Evidence: two families we can call, with names and phone numbers. Checked once; it does not expire.
What Mitlea does not do
A safety page that lists only reassurances is not a safety page. These are the limits, stated plainly, because knowing them is what lets you decide properly.
Mitlea is not a licensed childcare agency
It is a place where families and independent caregivers find each other. It does not operate a childcare facility, it is not a nanny agency placing staff, and it does not hold a childcare licence.
Mitlea does not employ caregivers
Every caregiver here works for herself. She sets her own rate, her own hours and her own rules about the work she takes, and she is not supervised, trained or directed by Mitlea.
Mitlea does not supervise sessions
Nobody from Mitlea is present, watching or monitoring while a caregiver is with your children. There are no cameras, no check-in calls and no live oversight of any kind.
Mitlea is not an emergency service
We cannot dispatch help, reach a caregiver mid-session or intervene in something happening right now. In an emergency, call 911 first.
A badge is not a prediction
Checking a document tells you what a document said on the day someone looked at it. It cannot tell you how a person will act next Saturday, and no verification anywhere can.
Mitlea does not guarantee outcomes
We do not promise that a session will go well, and we do not insure it. Meeting a caregiver before you book, and trusting your own judgement, remains the most important safety step there is.
What we do with what you tell us about your children
To book a caregiver you tell Mitlea a few things about your children — a first name, an age, allergies, a bedtime routine, an emergency contact. That is the most sensitive information in the whole system and it is treated that way.
Read the privacy policy- A child's record is never public, never appears in a search result and never appears in a web address.
- When you send a request, the caregiver sees each attached child's first name and age — she cannot decide whether she can take the booking without them.
- Everything else you have recorded — allergies, dietary notes, routines, emergency contacts — reaches her only once she has accepted.
- No caregiver browsing the site can see that your children exist.
- You can edit or delete a child's record from your account at any time.
What you can do
Talk to her first
Message her through Mitlea and ask whatever you would ask on the phone. There is no cost and no obligation, and a conversation tells you more than any badge.
Meet before you book
Ask to meet, with your children there. Most caregivers here expect it, and a caregiver who will not meet you is telling you something.
Read reviews that had to be earned
Only a family who booked and completed a session through Mitlea can leave a review. There is no other route for one to appear, which is why there are fewer of them here.
Keep it on Mitlea
A booking made here has a written record of what was agreed and a way to report a problem. An arrangement made off the platform has neither. Online payment is not switched on yet, so payment itself is between you and your caregiver.
Reporting
If something is wrong
Report from the conversation with the person concerned: open the thread and choose to report. It takes one form, and you do not have to explain yourself to anyone before it takes effect.
You can also block someone from the same place. Blocking is immediate, it does not notify them, and it does not require you to file a report first.
If you cannot reach the conversation, or you no longer have an account, email hello@mitlea.com.
What you can report
- Something about a child's safety
- Asked to arrange or pay for care outside Mitlea
- Rude, aggressive or inappropriate messages
- Did not show up, or left early
- Is not who her profile says she is
- Something else
Anything involving a child’s safety
Call 911 first if a child is hurt or in danger. Then file the report. A report marked as concerning a child’s safety is treated as the most serious kind we have, is worked before anything else, and is never closed automatically.
